Pre-Symposium Courses at European Seating Symposium 2007

Practical Pressure Management by the Healthcare Team: Issues of the Seating Interface and Heels

This course focused upon translating research findings into clinical applications and offer delegates practical suggestions to assist with pressure management. Presented by six researchers and clinicians drawn from nursing and occupational therapy professions, the workshop focus upon pressure management at the seating interface and at the heels, a commonly overlooked area but one potentially 'at risk' when feet elevation is achieved whilst in the seated position.

Day 1 - Monday 30th April 2007
Facilitors:
Dr Shelley Crawford,
Senior Occupational Therapist, Mater Hospital Trust, Belfast.

Dr Jeannie Donnelly,
Tissue Viability Specialist, Royal Group of Hospitals Trust, Belfast

Dr Alison Porter-Armstrong (Chair),
Senior Lecturer Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Ulster

Ms Julia Shaw,
Tissue Viability Specialist, Royal Group of Hospitals, Belfast.

Dr May Stinson,
Lecturer in Occupational Therapy, University of Ulster

Mrs Anne Witherrow,
Tissue Viability Specialist, Altnagelvin Hospital, Londonderry

Margaret Nordel,
Central Remedial Clinic, Clontarf, Dublin

Ursula Kilduff,
Central Remedial Clinic, Clontarf, Dublin

Geoff Thompson, MSS-Flotech

Sharon Pratt PT, Sunrise Medical

Bart Van Der Heyden PT, ROHO Inc.

Length - 7 hours
Level - Intermediate

Questions which will be explored through the course of the day will include:

Does gender, body mass, or 'settling time' impact upon interface pressure at the seating interface?

Do pregnant women experience an increased risk of pressure ulceration?

Do seat cushion covers impact upon interface pressure (hammocking)?

Can the visual interpretation of interface pressure maps from computerised pressure measurement systems be relied upon?

How is clinical judgement and pressure management decision making affected by the introduction of interface pressure measurement systems?

How does heel elevation when seated increase the risk of pressure ulceration?

How effective are commercially available heel elevation devices?

How can the practitioner influence wound healing and pressure relief of neuropathic ulceration?

Whilst exploring these questions, the focus of the day will remain upon practical 'take home' strategies for pressure management. Opportunities shall also be given for delegates to discuss issues related to this challenging clinical specialty.

09:00 - 09:15 Introductions; review course agenda and goals

09:15 - 09:45 Nursing Perspectives in Pressure Care

09:45 - 11:15 Practical Pressure Management

11:30 - 13:00 Practical Pressure Management

13:30 - 15:00 Practical Pressure Management

15:15 - 15:45 From bed to chair- safeguarding the patient. Planning patient rehabilitation and mobilisation from bed to chair  requires  an understanding  of and application of tissue damage risk reduction and the differing dynamics involved. Can you afford to be ignorant?
