Standardising Professional Education for Assistive Technology & Seating and Mobility Personnel

Belinda Davis, Bryan Boyle
Client Technical Services, Central Remedial Clinic

As recently as 2003, the European Commission highlighted the need to address the training and education requirements of the variety of stakeholders in the area of Assistive Technology (EU DG Employment & Social Affairs 2003). Recent literature has pointed to the responsibility of Assistive Technology Centres in the provision of professional education and training (Boyle et al 2005, Gresswell et al 2005).

This paper intends to outline efforts by the Central Remedial Clinic to develop and deliver certified Assistive Technology training for personnel at all levels of service delivery. This two-year, part time course is certified by the National University of Ireland through University College Dublin, thereby responding to the need for AT personnel to participate in recognised and certified educational programmes (Craddock & Murphy ‘98). This paper will also address the ongoing issues that personnel have striving toward gaining a recognised qualification in a service area that is by its nature multi-disciplinary.
