Dealing with clients who have been in wheelchairs for a number of years is a challenge and a pleasure. These clients are fully aware of their needs for function and what they must do on a daily basis to work, play and take care of themselves. Many have stories of past dealings with therapists and dealers who felt they knew best about what was needed, and did not listen to the client when providing equipment that would reflect on their lives and function for the next 5 years. Stories of pain, dysfunction, and little used “new chairs” are common.
It is so easy to utilize funding guidelines or “the best posture” theory to base the prescription on, but in the end the client may not receive what is necessary to function. This workshop reviews the need to compromise as well as allowing for full exposure of all issues at hand. The session will include a review of the MAT Assessment and set up of wheelchairs and seating to enhance functioning as well as positioning.
