Understanding Muscular Skeletal Pain

Jessica Presperin Pedersen, MBA, OTR/L, A TP

Pain is a common complaint that will often be a motivator for an individual to seek help from a medical professional. When an individual using a wheelchair complains of pain, the therapist should be aware of the mechanisms of pain to be able to determine the primary focus of intervention.

This workshop will describe the Musculoskeletal Pain Classification System developed by the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. This Classification System delineates Central Nervous System Pain types from Peripheral Nervous System Pain Types. Understanding the Primary Pain Mechanism the Client is experiencing will provide the seating therapists with knowledge to make a decision to address the wheelchair or seating system or to refer the individual for alternative intervention. Case studies will be used to further explain the intervention chosen.

Objectives:
Participant will:
1. Identify the central nervous system pain types
2. Identify the peripheral nervous system pain types
3. Identify wheelchair and seating intervention in an Attempt to alleviate Pain
