Seating, Mobility and Skin
Considerations for the Bariatric Client -
Persons with a diagnosis of Obesity
Monday 14th September 2009, 09.30 - 12.30
Presenter: Jean L. Minkel, PT, ATP
(Register here to attend the Course, fee: €120)
Course description
This workshop will cover the unique postural support,
skin integrity, and mobility needs of the bariatric
client. Obesity presents many impairments - respiratory, circulatory and skin integrity, which have
an impact on almost every functional activity.
Participants will learn to conduct a seating
assessment to determine the needed postural
supports to encourage function and protects skin
intergrity.
In addition to seating supports, considertation to
providing functional mobility will be addressed.
Options and considerations for providing manual mobility and power mobility will be presented. A
discussion will also be facilaited to consider issues of
skin intergrity beyond pressure management.
Course objectives
Participants in this workshop will learn:
• To assess the distribution of adipose tissue when
the person assumes the seated position.
• To measure the bariatric client in order to provide
postural support and accommodate excessive tissue
as needed.
• To determine the center of gravity of the bariatric
client and use this information in the set-up of a
wheeled mobility base.
• To understand the advantages and disadvantages
of manual versus power mobility for the bariatric
client.
• To consider skin intergrity concerns when working
with a person with obesity.
