Course description
Manual wheelchair users require comprehensive education and training that is directly and indirectly related to actual wheelchair use. This session supports rehabilitation professionals to understand and provide comprehensive client support for maximized independence, advanced mobility skills, safety, long term health, and improved quality of life. Guidance will be offered for practical education methods and training techniques. Live demonstration and hands-on practice will be emphasized.
Course objectives
• Coordinate a comprehensive education and training program for manual wheelchair users.
• Describe the treatment progression from basic wheelchair maneuvers to advanced wheelchair skills.
• Identify 4 wheelchair propulsion styles and identify biomechanically advantageous propulsion techniques.
• Perform and teach a wheelchair “wheelie”.
• Perform and teach three advanced “wheelie” skills.
