Speakers at the Symposium

Kay Ohlendieck, PhD:
Chair of Biology at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth

Kay received his undergraduate degree from the University of Konstanz, Germany and a PhD in Biochemistry from University College Cork. Following postdoctoral research at the University of Iowa, the Max-Planck-Institute of Developmental Biology in Tuebingen and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, he worked as a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology, University College Dublin. In 2001, he was appointed Professor of Biology at NUI Maynooth. He is on the editorial board of Molecular Medicine Reports and Basic and Applied Myology, and a member of the Life Science Committee of the Royal Irish Academy.

Kay Ohlendieck

Dr. Ohlendieck was awarded a principal investigator grant from Science Foundation Ireland in 2004 for studying the proteomic profile of skeletal muscle fibres. Over the last 12 years, the European Commission, the Wellcome Trust, the Health Research Board, Enterprise Ireland and Muscular Dystrophy Ireland have funded his research into skeletal muscle biology. For this work, he received the 2006 IAS Medal from the Biochemical Society.

Currently his laboratory focuses on the biochemical and proteomic characterisation of neuromuscular diseases affecting the regulation of skeletal muscle fibres, i.e. muscular dystrophy, myotonia congenita, malignant hyperthermia, diabetes-related muscle weakness and sarcopenia of old age.

Kay's presentation at the Symposium:
