Speakers at the Symposium
Matt Ramer, PhD:
Associate Professor, British Columbia Neurotrauma Fund Professor
Matt obtained his Bachelor’s (Life Sciences, 1995) and PhD (Physiology, 1998) degrees from Queen’s University at Kingston, where he specialized in the study of neuropathic pain. He then carried out a post-doctoral fellowship at King’s College (University of London) investigating regeneration of sensory nerve fibres in the injured spinal cord.
In 2001 he was appointed assistant professor (zoology/neurosurgery) at the University of British Columbia. He holds the British Columbia Neurotrauma Fund Professorship at the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD), the world’s largest centre dedicated exclusively to the study and treatment of spinal cord injury. Matt’s research interests are centred around changes in sensory circuitry in the wake of neurotrauma.
Matt is holds a Senior Scholar award from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and a New Investigator award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). His work has been funded by the CIHR, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the International Spinal Research Trust (UK), the Canada Foundation for Innovation, and the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation (US). In 2005, Matt and Leanne Ramer shared the Spinal Cord Prize, awarded every two years to young investigators by the International Spinal Cord Society in recognition of an outstanding publication.
